Published as the second title of Specter’s Workroom, a series of critical writings focused on material works of design and arts, Who’s Afraid of the White Cube? [in Korean] starts with a simple question: how to exhibit graphic design? Attempting to answer it, however, would prove to be not so simple a task. Design concerns products used in everyday life, not museums or galleries, so merely moving the designed objects in to the “white cube” does not automatically result in a meaningful exhibition. Even when a graphic designer is given an opportunity to create a work specifically for gallery viewing, they tend to have a hard time adapting to the unfamiliar assumptions, expectations, and material conditions of the white cube. Who’s Afraid of the White Cube? critically discusses some of the strategies that have been used by graphic designers in recent years to tackle the challenge.
