In a mass-democratic society like South Korea, the people’s political wills are formally expressed through periodic elections – and more informally through opinion polls about various issues from the president’s job performance to support for major political parties and economic outlooks. And in these polls, the issues directly related to particular individuals’ lives and existential concerns are reduced to mere numbers like 2.7 points or 47.4 percent.
Kinetic Political Abstraction further abstracts the already abstract polling results, turning them into images that may, ironically, physically affect the viewer’s body. The work consists of a series of optical illusions created by spinning the pie charts that visualize statistical data published every week by Gallup Korea. During the exhibition, it is continuously updated and expanded reflecting the content of the weekly polling report.
