Hwayeon Nam: Mind Stream
This is a catalog for Nam Hwayeon’s exhibition of the same name, in which the artist explores the notion of time and history through her investigation into the life and work of Choi Seung-hee, a modern Korean dancer and choreographer. The sense of the parallel timelines in the exhibition is reflected by the multiple covers: a cover with a dust jacket and an outsert, each carrying elements from Choi Seung-hee’s 1935 work, Nam Hwayeon’s 2014 reworking of the performance, and a detail of Nam’s 2019 video. The jackets are trimmed to differing heights, partially revealing the images underneath.
The book republishes a selection of writings by and about Choi Seung-hee. This section is distinguised from other parts by its orientation, upside-down, therefore following a reversed timeline.
