    Morisawa Calendar 2025

Morisawa, the Japanese type foundry, invited twelve designers around the world and asked each one to design a given month’s calendar with the common theme of “ligature.” The works were gathered and published as their 2025 corporate calendar. We were given February, and this is our note:

Can a joke be communicated across languages and cultures? “The Good Name” is a sketch first featured in a South Korean TV comedy program in the early 1970s. It tells the story of a superstitious man who wanted a long and strong name for his only son. The “good name” designed by an oracle to ensure the heir’s health and longevity turns out to be fatal because everyone in the family is too obsessed with uttering the ridiculously long name fully and correctly to act urgently and save the drowning child. This is our second attempt to translate the story into English as part of our ongoing work on jokes.

The name in question, by the way, is: Kim Immortal Turtle Crane Two-Hundred-Millenarian Dongfang Shuo Chitchikapo Sarisarisenta Woriwori Sebrigang Methuselah Cloud Hurricane Wall Mouse Cat And the Doggy Was Doldori.
