Ob.scene is a performing arts journal focused on the “things out of the stage.” The tenth issue “takes as its starting point the possibility of experiences and sensations that bypass, circumvent, corrupt or otherwise intercept subjectivity, or personhood. Can we imagine or must such experiences be forms of accidents or negatives that show up rather than being wilfully constructed?” (Ob/scene Festival 2024 program brochure, n.p.)
In its form and materiality – the large format and slim volume, cheap adhesive binding, smooth white paper, dense typography, and the images overwhelming the text – Ob.scene 10 is meant to be seen and read as a glossy illustrated magazine. Without such conventional separators as headings and section dividers, the articles flow into and mingle with each other. In contrast with the image-heavy pages, the blank cover honors the identity of Ob.scene. The cover image and the masthead, UV-printed in transparent gloss, may appear or disappear depending on the illumination.
